Security Halt
**these are the steps for squad actions. Keep in mind to use common sense when on a patrol. If you are in a time crunch consolidate/omit steps to make time hack**to get a go you have to pass 70% of graded events. For example if you are the planning sl you are graded on warno/opord/movement/lda/react to contact. If you are the execution sl you are graded on orp/movement/actions on the objective/lda/linkup. So if you do not cross an lda you will not get graded for it. If you think you need more events to pass cross lda’s or spend a little time to prepare for the next one during the movement.

-SL will confirm, change, or abort location
-SL/ATL will conduct recon in this order assault/support/security. SL will get down in position and ensure each position is feasible. Kill zone should have recognizable features (bent tree, off color tree, cluster of trees, etc). Security needs to be off road with enough distance to be separate from assault and support elements. Each time SL passes SO get thumbs up (they will not have radio)
-After recon tell SO occupy gotwa in effect. Radio RTO and have him tell BTL to get men in SHP (MWE should be completed) this will be far recognition signal. SL will give near recognition signal when near ORP.

Weapons: M4/M249/M240/AT4 (muzzle to butstock) muzzle clear, front sight post clear, handles, receiver, magazine full press down on it, round in chamber, tap forward assist 3 times, rear site is up, trigger, buttstock, on saw make sure kickstand working, on saw and 240 bolt to rear, loaded and on safe (Saw 200 rds/240 500 rds), AT4 check transport pin, no cracks, front/rear sites. Equipment (RTBNS – radio, tripod, binos, nods, special equipment) Radio tied down and working, waterproof if necessary, ensure SO/ATL and SL has mbitr. Tripod opens correctly t&e and pinnel tied down. Binos taped to avoid glare tied down. Nods if ambush hit time is at or near dusk bring them, make sure they have fresh batteries, are tied down, and work. -SL confirms route and leaves (3) Gotwas (1) BTL (also special instructions: keep men awake, prepare MWE, sector sketch, emplace claymores, will radio on way back to get in SHP) (2) ATL/GR recon element (3) S/O. BTL will count out of orp.
-moves to RP formation and order of movement is modified wedge atl/gr/sl/ar/gr/r looking for natural line of drift easily recognizable. Conduct S,L,L,S at RP. Security established and rucks dropped one at a time TM1/TM2/SO
-Everyone moves to objective when at last cover and concealed position conduct S,L,L,S. Pinpoint objective and emplace SO team, assign sectors of fire, advise gotwa in effect
-SL will establish LOA. SL/GR recon team heads one direction ATL/GR heads the other direction cloverleaf around objective conducting S,L,L,S throughout. Recon will continue until one of 3 things are completed (Time/LOA/PIR) Recon may take hours. For each team one member will recon (salute/sketch) while the other is pulling rear security then they will switch this way there are 2 reports for each team. If all pertinent information is obtained in first cloverleaf then head back to RP otherwise continue until information is obtained. Your grade will be determined by if enemy detected you. RI will also most likely have enemy engage to see what you do. If engaged all enemy should return fire until magazine empty then head back to RP and wait 5 minutes also give clear guidance to ORP.
-recon element back to RP then moves to orp. Radio will serve as far recognition signal/hand signal will serve as near recognition signal.
-Squad moves 1000m or next terrain feature then conducts SH and consolidates information and sends to higher.
-RI will index mission move squad to equipment layout ASAP and then AAR.
**on an area recon bravo team has a easy task and will get to rack out with ranger buddy on watch. Members of the recon team will have to high/low crawl**
Linkup
-ATL will signal halt with hand and arm signal (100-200m in low visibility) (200-400 in good visibility)
-Strongpoint 10, 2, 4, 8. SL will emplace AG/MG at 12 o’clock
-SL/ATL/BTL will assign sectors of interlocking fire 35m outside of formation
-SL will give hand and arm signal for S,L,L,S
-3-5 minutes later SL will give hand and arm signal that S,L,L,S is completed
-ATL/SL will conduct a map check. BTL will confirm security
-ATL will disseminate distance/direction to team from 3 to 9 by way of 12
-BTL/SL will conduct a map check
-BTL will disseminate distance/direction to team from 9 to 3 by way of 6
-SL will place squad in long halt posture
-SL will spotcheck security and information passed out correctly to Alpha/Bravo team
-SL will radio linkup man and ask the following questions (this will serve as far recognition signal):
1) Has the site changed?
2) Has the marking changed?
3) Can I probe? I’ll be coming from this direction.
-SL will take ATL(so)/AR(so)/RTO to linkup
-Formation order of movement is diamond shape ATL/SL front/rear AR/RTO left/right
-SL will leave gotwa with BTL and give special instructions to check security, keep men awake, and get into short halt posture when SL radios. SL will leave gotwa with SO (ATL/AR).
-Linkup team will move to so position (overwatch over linkup)
-SL will conduct S,L,L,S 3-5 minutes. Place SO in position, assign sectors of fire, put gotwa into effect
-SL/RTO will approach linkup and give near recognition signal (given in opord)
-SL will do the following:
1) Introduce SL/RTO
2) How long will you be here?
3) How much room do you have in the truck?
4) If anything happens to me can you safely transport the S/O team?
5) Do you need security? If so, do you want me to emplace them?
-SL will then radio BTL to get men in short halt posture (far recognition)
-SL will signal near recognition when close and move men to linkup location. Radio ATL/AR to move to linkup location.
-Squad will pull security until LMTV arrives. Squad will provide security around LMTV and load according to load plan (given in opord)
LDA
-ATL signals LDA. Squad strongpoints 10, 2, 4, 8. S,L,L,S
-SL gets eyes on LDA and determines if active/inactive. **if in doubt treat as active if you blow through an lda that the ri thinks is active you will fail that portion of the patrol. You need 70% on graded tasks to get a go**
-SL disseminates FSRP (GL/TF/DIS/DIR) and NSRP.
-SL directs BTL to emplace weak side security and SL emplaces strong side security. Typically security is within eyesight so no need for gotwa
-Alpha team pushes across LDA and clears the farside. Radio/thumbs up SL.
-SL sends HQ across
-one member of each security team pushes across to farside
-other members push across accountability is given to SL
**main thing with LDA is to be quick and emplace security in the best position on road. If you have to push out to see past curve do it.**
Your information is spot on. Good study/refresher material to get ready for ranger school.
